During the scan, you will lie on your back while the sonographer gently moves the probe over your neck and jaw area. No special preparation is required.

Thyroid Ultrasound
A thyroid scan is often recommended if you have a palpable lump, visible swelling, or abnormal thyroid function. Ultrasound can determine:
Whether a lump is inside or outside the thyroid gland
Whether it is a cyst (usually benign) or a solid nodule
If a biopsy is needed for further analysis
For the scan, you will lie on your back while the probe is moved over your neck and upper chest. You may be asked to remove jewellery or clothing in the area, but no other preparation is required.
Scrotal Ultrasound
Scrotal (testicular) ultrasound is the primary imaging technique for investigating abnormalities in the scrotum. It can help diagnose:
Pain, swelling, or lumps
Undescended or absent testicles
Inflammation or infection
Testicular torsion (twisted testis)
Fluid collections (hydrocele, varicocele)
Abnormal blood vessels or tumours
The scan is painless and non-invasive. You will lie on your back, and disposable covers will be used for privacy while the sonographer applies gel and gently scans the area. The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes and requires no special preparation.

Abdominal Scans - Don't eat for 6-8 Hours beforehand.
Pelvic/early pregnancy scans - Arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
Most other scans – No special preparation needed.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to adjust or remove clothing around the area being scanned.
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation), so it is very safe; even during pregnancy. It has been used in healthcare for decades.
A sonographer will place some cool gel on your skin and gently move a small handheld device (probe) over the area being scanned. You might be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly, or move a joint (for musculoskeletal scans).
A written report will be ready within 24–48 hours and sent to the Referring GP for NHS Patients.
Images or video clips (for pregnancy scans) can be provided immediately for Private Patients.
