Our General (Abdominal) Ultrasound scans are carried out by experienced sonographers using advanced equipment, helping to detect the cause of symptoms quickly and accurately in a supportive, patient-focused setting.

What Is an Abdominal Ultrasound?

An abdominal ultrasound scan (also called abdominal sonography) uses sound waves to create images of your abdominal organs. It is commonly used to investigate pain, bloating, or other symptoms and can help diagnose:

  • Gallstones

  • Kidney stones

  • Enlarged organs

  • Spleen injuries

  • Inflamed appendix

  • Aortic aneurysm

This type of scan is one of the most effective ways to provide clear, accurate insights into abdominal health.

Preparing for your Ultrasound Scan

To get the best possible images, you may be asked to:

  • Eat a fat-free meal the evening before your scan

  • Avoid food and milk for 8–12 hours before your appointment

Fasting keeps the gallbladder full and reduces excess gas in the intestines, helping us capture sharper, more reliable images.

Special Advice for Diabetic Patients

If you are diabetic, please let us know when booking. We will arrange a morning appointment or provide specific guidance to ensure fasting does not affect your sugar levels.

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation), so it is very safe; even during pregnancy. It has been used in healthcare for decades.

A sonographer will place some cool gel on your skin and gently move a small handheld device (probe) over the area being scanned. You might be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly, or move a joint (for musculoskeletal scans).

A written report will be ready within 24–48 hours and sent to the Referring GP for NHS Patients.

Images or video clips (for pregnancy scans) can be provided immediately for Private Patients.
