Scan Type:
Vascular (DVT) Scans
At Harmonic Medical Sonography, we use vascular ultrasound with Doppler technology to check blood flow in your veins and arteries. This safe, painless scan can detect blood clots, blockages, aneurysms, and circulation problems, giving you clear answers and peace of mind.

At Harmonic Medical Sonography, we provide specialist vascular ultrasound scans to assess blood flow in the body’s arteries and veins. These scans are commonly used to check for deep vein thrombosis (DVT) blood clots in the leg; but can also detect a wide range of vascular conditions.
Performed by our expert sonographers using advanced imaging and Doppler technology, these scans provide real-time, accurate results that help guide diagnosis and treatment.
What is a Vascular Ultrasound?
A vascular ultrasound is a safe, painless, non-invasive test that uses sound waves to examine how blood flows through the body. It can:
Monitor blood flow to organs and tissues throughout the body
Locate blockages or narrowing in arteries and veins caused by clots, plaque, or emboli
Help plan and evaluate treatments such as angioplasty, grafts, or bypass procedures
Detect abnormal widening (aneurysm) of blood vessels, which can have serious risks if left untreated
Assess varicose veins to identify their source and guide surgical planning
- Fully accredited and regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
- Experienced sonographers trained to NHS standards

Why Might You Need a DVT Scan?
You may be referred for a vascular ultrasound if you have:
Pain, swelling, or tenderness in the leg (possible DVT)
Redness, warmth, or discolouration over a vein
Heavy or aching sensations in the leg (possible varicose veins)
Abdominal symptoms requiring assessment of the aorta for aneurysm
A history of vascular conditions requiring monitoring
Doppler Ultrasound
We also use Doppler ultrasound, a specialist technique that measures the speed and volume of blood flow in real time. This helps detect:
Blood clots (DVT)
Narrowing of vessels due to plaque or other causes
Tumours or congenital abnormalities affecting circulation
Blockages in major arteries and veins of the neck, abdomen, arms, and legs
Areas We Commonly Scan
At Harmonic Medical Sonography, we perform:
Abdominal aorta scans – to assess for aneurysms
Lower limb scans – to check for deep vein thrombosis (DVT)
Upper limb scans – to investigate circulation or clotting problems
Varicose vein mapping – to support surgical planning
What to Expect During the Scan
You may be asked to remove clothing or jewellery in the area being examined. A gown will be provided if needed.
You will lie on your back on an examination couch while a sonographer applies gel and moves a handheld probe (transducer) across the skin.
For DVT scans, the sonographer may gently press along the vein to assess blood flow.
The procedure is safe, painless, and usually takes 20–30 minutes.
No special preparation is required for vascular scans.

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation), so it is very safe; even during pregnancy. It has been used in healthcare for decades.
A sonographer will place some cool gel on your skin and gently move a small handheld device (probe) over the area being scanned. You might be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly, or move a joint (for musculoskeletal scans).
A written report will be ready within 24–48 hours and sent to the Referring GP for NHS Patients.
Images or video clips (for pregnancy scans) can be provided immediately for Private Patients.
