Scan Type:
Gynaecological (Pelvic) Scans
A safe, detailed scan used to assess the uterus, ovaries, and surrounding pelvic structures. It helps diagnose causes of pain, irregular bleeding, or fertility concerns, providing fast and accurate results for peace of mind.

At Harmonic Medical Sonography, we provide expert gynaecological (pelvic) ultrasound scans to assess the uterus, endometrium, ovaries, and surrounding tissues. These scans are an essential tool for investigating pelvic symptoms and supporting women’s health.
For men, pelvic ultrasound can also be used to examine the bladder and prostate gland.
Our experienced sonographers use advanced ultrasound technology to deliver clear, accurate results in a safe and supportive environment.
Why have a Pelvic Ultrasound?
A pelvic scan may be recommended to help investigate:
Pelvic pain or discomfort
Irregular or heavy periods
Infertility concerns
Fibroids, cysts, or polyps
Endometrial or ovarian conditions
Bladder or prostate problems (in men)

Types of Pelvic Ultrasound Scans
1. Transabdominal Scan
Uses the probe on top of your lower abdomen.
Requires a full bladder to act as a “window” to the uterus and ovaries.
Please drink at least 500ml (2 cups) of water one hour before your scan and try to hold it until your appointment.
You will lie on your back while the sonographer moves the probe across your lower abdomen.
This method is safe and effective, but because of the distance between the probe and pelvic organs, it may be less detailed than a transvaginal scan.
2. Transvaginal Scan (Internal Scan)
Provides a closer, clearer view of the uterus, endometrium, and ovaries.
No special preparation is required other than having an empty bladder before the scan.
You will lie on your back with your knees bent (or on your side if more comfortable).
A small lubricated probe is gently inserted into the vagina.
This type of scan is usually well tolerated, should not be painful, and only takes a few minutes.
Can be performed at any point in the menstrual cycle, and your results will not be affected.
If you have concerns about attending during your period, our appointments team will be happy to discuss the best timing for you.
What to Expect During the Scan
Both scan methods are safe, painless, and non-invasive (other than the gentle internal approach if transvaginal).
The procedure usually takes 15–30 minutes.
Your sonographer will explain the process and findings clearly throughout.
Results can be shared directly with your GP, consultant, or fertility specialist if required.

Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation), so it is very safe; even during pregnancy. It has been used in healthcare for decades.
A sonographer will place some cool gel on your skin and gently move a small handheld device (probe) over the area being scanned. You might be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly, or move a joint (for musculoskeletal scans).
A written report will be ready within 24–48 hours and sent to the Referring GP for NHS Patients.
