Scan Type:

Kidney (Urinary Tracts) Scans

A safe, non-invasive scan used to assess the kidneys, bladder, and urinary system. It helps detect kidney stones, infections, bladder problems, and prostate issues in men. Our experienced sonographers provide fast, accurate results in a professional, patient-focused environment.

At Harmonic Medical Sonography, we provide safe and accurate urinary tract (kidney) ultrasound scans to investigate a wide range of urinary system conditions. Performed by experienced sonographers using advanced technology, these scans give clear insights into the health of your kidneys, bladder, and urinary pathways in a supportive and professional environment.

What is a Urinary Tract Ultrasound?

A urinary tract ultrasound (also called a kidney scan or renal sonography) uses sound waves to create images of the kidneys, bladder, and surrounding structures. It is commonly used to detect:

  • Kidney stones

  • Urinary tract infections (UTIs)

  • Injuries to the kidneys or bladder

  • Congenital abnormalities of the urinary system

  • Prostate problems in men

This type of scan is non-invasive, painless, and provides valuable information to help guide diagnosis and treatment.

Preparing for your Scan

To achieve the clearest images, you will usually need a full bladder. Our booking team will advise you on how much water to drink and when before your appointment.

Keeping the bladder full helps us see the urinary tract more clearly, improving the accuracy of the scan.

What to Expect During the Scan

  • You will be asked to lie on your back on an examination couch.

  • A sonographer will apply a small amount of gel and move a handheld probe (transducer) across the side of your abdomen.

  • You may be asked to turn on your side to get the best possible images.

  • Your bladder volume may be measured, either before or after you urinate, to check how well your bladder empties.

  • The scan is safe, painless, and usually takes 15–30 minutes.

Once complete, you can return to your normal daily activities.
