Scan Type:
Pregnancy (Obstetric) Scans
At Harmonic Medical Sonography, we provide a full range of pregnancy ultrasound scans to support you throughout your maternity journey. Our scans are carried out by highly trained sonographers using advanced imaging technology, ensuring your baby’s growth and development are monitored with accuracy and care.

Our scans are non-invasive, painless, and highly reliable, offering reassurance for expectant parents. Depending on the stage, they can:
Confirm early development and establish an accurate due date
Monitor heartbeat, growth, and overall progress
Check the placenta and amniotic fluid levels
Assess baby’s position and wellbeing closer to delivery
Detect or rule out complications at an early stage
- Confirm if the baby is present.
- Check if there are multiple babies, e.g twins.
- Date the pregnancy (gestational age) and estimate delivery date (baby’s due date).
- Determine if it is an ectopic pregnancy (where the baby implants outside the uterus).
- Confirm the baby’s heartbeat and movement.
- Assess the baby’s growth to see if there is intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR)
- Check the location of the placenta in relation to the cervix.
- Determine the sex of the baby from 16 weeks upwards.
Our scans show if a baby is present, including the yolk and sac. We are able to determine a due date. These early viability scans do not show for abnormalities such as Down Syndrome.

What to Expect
Appointments are relaxed and patient-focused, typically lasting 20–30 minutes. During the scan, our specialists explain findings in clear, simple terms. You will receive:
Verbal feedback on the day
Digital or printed images to share with loved ones
A detailed report for your records or maternity team
What Types of Scans are Recommended?
The Society & College of Radiographers (SoR) and Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists (RCOG) recommend as standard:
First Trimester Scan – 0 to 12 weeks
This first scan can often be a combination of:
- Early Viability Scan – Check the heartbeat and movement of the baby
- Dating Scan – Confirm the due date of your baby. This is helpful if you are unsure of your last menstrual period or your date of conception.
Second Trimester Scan – 18 to 20 weeks
- Anomaly Scan – Detailed ultrasound scan that observes the position of the placenta, the umbilical cord, the amniotic fluid around your baby, and your uterus and cervix. Several measurements are taken to check the baby’s growth and development. The fetus is also assessed for any major anatomical abnormalities (such as problems with the head, limbs, heart and other internal organs). At this stage of pregnancy, the sex of the baby can often be determined. However, if the genital area is difficult to visualise due to the baby’s position, it can be difficult to tell whether the baby is a boy or a girl.
What preparations do I need?
For all obstetrics scans, no special preparation is needed, although it is best to wear loose clothing that can easily be lifted or removed in order to expose your abdomen.
Our experienced sonographer will ask you to lie on your back on an examination couch and the transducer moved across your stomach in order to obtain the best possible images of the baby.
For your first visit, please bring a valid ID, your insurance card, any current medications or a list of them, and any relevant medical records
Abdominal Scans - Don't eat for 6-8 Hours beforehand.
Pelvic/early pregnancy scans - Arrive with a comfortably full bladder.
Most other scans – No special preparation needed.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. You may be asked to adjust or remove clothing around the area being scanned.
Yes. Ultrasound uses sound waves (not radiation), so it is very safe; even during pregnancy. It has been used in healthcare for decades.
A sonographer will place some cool gel on your skin and gently move a small handheld device (probe) over the area being scanned. You might be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly, or move a joint (for musculoskeletal scans).
A written report will be ready within 24–48 hours and sent to the Referring GP for NHS Patients.
Images or video clips (for pregnancy scans) can be provided immediately for Private Patients.
