Scan Type:
Breast Scans
A safe, painless scan used to assess breast lumps, implants, and other concerns. It helps distinguish between simple cysts and solid lumps, check implant integrity, and guide further care when needed.

At Harmonic Medical Sonography, we provide expert breast ultrasound scans to investigate breast concerns and support early, accurate diagnosis. Breast ultrasound is a safe, painless, and non-invasive imaging technique that is particularly useful for examining lumps, breast implants, and other abnormalities.
Our accredited clinics in Manchester, Essex, East Sussex, and Staffordshire offer fast appointments with highly experienced sonographers, ensuring you receive the reassurance and care you need.
What is a Breast Ultrasound Scan?
A breast ultrasound uses high-frequency sound waves to create detailed images of breast tissue. It is best suited to investigating a specific concern, such as:
A palpable lump or area of thickening
Pain, swelling, or changes in the breast
Issues relating to breast implants
Follow-up scans after a mammogram
Breast ultrasound is particularly effective in distinguishing between:
Simple cysts – fluid-filled lumps that carry no cancer risk
Solid lumps – which may require further investigation or biopsy
- Fully accredited and regulated by the Care Quality Commission (CQC)
- Experienced sonographers trained to NHS standards
- State-of-the-art ultrasound technology for accurate diagnosis
- Trusted by NHS referrers and private patients across multiple clinics
- Committed to patient safety, data security, and quality care

Breast Implant Assessment
With breast implants becoming more common, ultrasound plays a valuable role in assessing their integrity. A scan can help detect:
Implant rupture or leakage
Capsular thickening or changes
Associated abnormalities in surrounding tissue
During the same appointment, the armpit and chest wall can also be examined for enlarged lymph nodes, providing a more complete assessment of breast health.
What to Expect During the Scan
You will lie on your back with the arm on the same side raised above your head.
For a complete view, you may be gently rolled onto your opposite side to allow imaging of the outer breast.
A small amount of gel is applied, and a handheld probe (transducer) is moved across the breast to capture images.
The scan is painless, quick (usually 15–30 minutes), and safe.
If required, breast ultrasound may also be used to guide a biopsy for more detailed assessment.

A sonographer will place some cool gel on your skin and gently move a small handheld device (probe) over the area being scanned. You might be asked to change position, hold your breath briefly, or move a joint (for musculoskeletal scans).
