Breast ultrasound is a valuable tool in the diagnosis of breast abnormalities. It is best targeted to a specific clinical problem such as palpable lump.
The patient lies on their back, with the arm of the same side raised above the head on the pillow. The patient may be rolled onto the opposite side to examine the outer aspect of the breast. Breast ultrasound can quickly differentiate between simple cysts which carry no risk of malignancy, and solid nodules which require further investigations. If required, breast ultrasound helps by guiding biopsy
Breast implants are increasingly common in general breast ultrasound practice. Ultrasound helps to evaluate breast implants for rupture and leakage. We also quickly assess the armpit and chest wall for enlarged lymph nodes at the same time.
